The opportunity

The Mannum to Adelaide Pipeline, or MAP, was the first major pipeline built from the Murray River to meet the population of Adelaide’s demand for water. The 60km long pipeline was completed in 1955, and travels from Mannum, all the way to Modbury. The water then supplies the metropolitan network through the Anstey Hill Water Filtration Plant, and directly delivers water to residents in the Torrens Valley and the Eastern Foothills.

After decades of service, the 4 MAP substations required an upgrade to improve their availability and reliability.

The solution

Enerven undertook the upgrade for MAP substations 1 and 3, which involved the construction of the 132kV substations and transmission lines. Before breaking ground on the project, there was a period of public consultation around the visual impact of the MAP substation 1, which was followed by architectural input on the designs. As a result, the substation incorporates features that help blend the structures into the surrounding environment, successfully minimising the overall visible impact of the structure. During construction, Enerven broached the project with a novel design approach around the Mannum terrain as part of the Safety in Design process.

The upgrade to both substations was completed on time and to budget, implementing an innovative design approach and utilising an experienced project team to ensure seamless delivery; adding to an already long list of successful projects for our longstanding client, ElectraNet.
